BSc Actuarial Mathematics
Actuaries are experts in the assessment, valuation and management of risk and uncertainty. They use mathematical, statistical, financial and economic theory to solve real business problems, typically involving the financial impact and likelihood of undesirable events such as death or natural disasters.
This programme is taught jointly by the School of Mathematics and Leeds University Business School to offer you the best of both worlds. We provide you with a detailed knowledge and understanding of both the mathematical/statistical tools and the business finance/accounting background relevant to actuarial science, including financial mathematics, statistics of life and non-life insurance, financial and management accounting, and economics.
The traditional areas in which actuaries operate are in the insurance and pensions industry. They are also increasingly in demand in other parts of the private and public sector, where their analytical skills are of value. For example, financial services such as banking and investment management, consultancy, manufacturing, transport, and energy.
Mathematicians with specialisation in finance are experts in the quantitative analysis and modelling of financial contracts and derivatives as well as in risk management. The programme aims to develop your mathematical skills and business acumen. On completion of the course you will have a solid knowledge of mathematics, with an in-depth understanding of financial mathematics, business finance and economics. The course is taught jointly by the School of Mathematics and Leeds University Business School to offer you the best of both worlds. You will have access to tutors for both academic and personal advice in both Schools.
In each year, two thirds of the time is devoted to mathematics, covering the main areas of modern maths with particular focus on those relevant to finance; for example probability, statistics, financial and insurance mathematics. The remainder of the time is spent on studying business finance and economics.
The course will prepare you for a well-paid professional career in financial services and other parts of the private and public sector where analytical and mathematical skills are valued.
This Joint Honours BSc programme will be parented by the School of Mathematics from 2011/12 onwards.
Combining the study of economics and mathematics will provide you with appropriate and complementary skills for a successful career in a range of industries and the public sector. The economic analysis of real-world problems requires advanced mathematical and statistical skills. These are highly regarded by companies and the government and are of real relevance when exploring and addressing economic issues.
This course is taught jointly by the School of Mathematics and Leeds University Business School. In the first year you study key topics in mathematics, economics, statistics and finance.
